SUMMARY:Ask an Expert: Water-Wise Farming - Mitigating Drought and Employing Strategic Irrigation in Cut Flower Production
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Laura Barth\, American Floral Endowment Research Coordinator\, and Lindsay Daschner\, owner and Founder of Forget Me Not Farms\n\n\n\n\nWater is one of the most valuable resources on any flower farm\, and using it wisely is becoming increasingly important as growers face hotter temperatures\, prolonged drought\, and unpredictable weather patterns. Join Laura Barth of the American Floral Endowment (AFE) and Lindsay Daschner of Forget Me Not Farms and Bloom Beat for a practical discussion on improving water efficiency in cut flower production. Laura will highlight findings and resources from AFE-funded research on irrigation\, water management\, and sustainability\, while Lindsay will share real-world strategies for implementing drip irrigation\, water capture\, and making the most of every drop on the farm. Whether you’re farming in an arid climate or simply looking to build resilience into your operation\, you’ll leave with the latest research-backed resources and practical\, field-tested ideas you can put to work right away to improve irrigation efficiency and conserve water. \nLaura Barth is the Research Director at the American Floral Endowment\, where she oversees the organization’s floriculture research program and works to connect growers with practical\, research-based solutions. She collaborates with researchers and industry partners to identify emerging production challenges\, develop educational resources\, and translate scientific findings into actionable information for growers. \nLindsay Daschner is the owner of Forget Me Not Farms\, a specialty wholesale cut flower farm in Ottawa Lake\, Michigan\, serving florists throughout southeast Michigan and northwest Ohio. A graduate of Michigan State University\, Lindsay founded the farm in 2016 and has grown it into a thriving operation specializing in sustainably grown\, seasonal cut flowers. She is also the editor of Bloom Beat\, Ball Publishing’s newsletter for cut flower growers\, where she shares practical production tips\, business strategies\, and lessons learned from the farm alongside her four-legged sidekick\, Tater. Passionate about helping other flower farmers succeed\, Lindsay is known for her candid\, hands-on approach to topics ranging from crop production and irrigation to mechanization\, labor management\, and farm profitability. \nZoom instructions will be emailed to members on the day of the event. All Ask an Expert Webinars are recorded. \nSponsored by:
