The Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers, Inc. (ASCFG) announced at the 2009 National Conference in Hauppauge, New York, that it has named its academic scholarship in honor of outgoing ASCFG president, Dave Dowling.
Dave is the owner of Farmhouse Flowers and Plants in Brookeville, Maryland. He grows more than 75 varieties of annuals, perennials and woody shrubs as cut flowers, which are sold at several Washington, D.C. area farmers’ markets. He is well known in the cut flower industry as an effective and engaging speaker, and is also a member of the Maryland Cut Flower Growers Association.
Dowling has employed several high school and college students on his farm, as part-time employees and interns. Not only do these young people learn the nuts and bolts of cut flower and perennial production, Dave often pays their way to national and regional cut flower meetings, where they make connections with growers from around the country.
Dave has served on the ASCFG Board as the ASCFG Mid-Atlantic Regional Director, and is finishing two successful terms as President.
